For most Americans, it’s not an question of “if” it’s a question of “which.” Which shampoo to buy, that is. The overwhelming majority of us shampoo our hair everyday, a habit reflected partially in the fact that $38 billion dollars globally go to hair products annually. To not shampoo and condition your hair is to expose the world around you to an exposition of ugliness, right?
Would you know? Chances are you’ve never gone a day without putting shampoo and conditioner in your hair. As it turns out, the alleged necessity of these products in staving off the need to start looking for a hair transplant doctor is actually something virtually unfounded by science. Sure, shampoo makes your hair smell great and look shiny, but does it really make a difference in determining the cleanliness of your hair?
According to the research found in an MSNBC article from 2009, the overwhelming number of dermatologists agree that while shampoo is perfectly okay to use, it is not the only way to have a clean healthy head of hair. In fact, many experts believe that shampoo use causes a vicious cycle wherein the natural oils of the hair are removed too much, leaving the hair dry and the human looking for shampoos and conditioners to replenish these secretions. If there’s any advice on the issue of shampoo use, it’s to not use too much.
But giving up shampoo is much easier said than done for most people. While the idea is great and sure to save you time and money, simply using water to wash your hair will have immediate effects that don’t inspire further commitment to the no-shampoo policy. You see, all that shampoo use has caused your hair to create an overabundance of oils to make up for what you’re constantly stripping away. Therefore for the first few weeks your hair looks pretty bad, no lying.
Eventually however the hair returns to a normal state of oil release. If you continue to rinse your hair out with warm water thoroughly everyday yet skip the shampoo, you’re sure to like what you see.
Oh…and conditioner you can gladly keep. Without shampoo it still helps keep the frizzes to a minimum without removing anything from your natural hair.
If you’re brave enough to give it a shot, see for yourself how shampoo might be an expense you and your sense of style can live without.
